It was the general opinion amongst the people that old Joshua was a Portuguese. Did not see old Joshua associate with white people. I do not know the difference between an Indian and a Portuguese. The first Indian I ever saw was at Shown’s Crossroads. He resembled an Indian more than a negro. He was a dark skinned man, darker than Joshua. 5 Thomas COOK, aged 75 I knew old Joshua PERKINS. Never heard them called Mulattos or Portugeuse No. I knew the relationship of the PERKINS always called Portugeuse. The people there said they were of the Portugeuse. 2 Sarah KENNICK s and aged 75 Knew them in Carter 40 years ago. I lived in 2 ½ miles, never heard them called anything else than Portugeuse. Jacob and his family asociated white peoples, clerked at elections & voted & had all privileges. Jacob’s color and features described of little darker than Joshua. Johnson HAMPTON said they were Portugese & he had seen Jacob’s father & his mother a scotch woman. I taught school at Perkin’s school house. KENNICK, age 77 Has known the PERKINS family 49 years. They had the same privileges as other folks. I knew Isaac, Lewis and Polly, three of their children. Old man was called Jock, large, tall, mixed blood and not white. They were sometimes listed as mulattos in census records. The Perkins were part Indian and intermarried with the Indians and related families.
